Carlene Davis

REAL NAME: Carlene Davis - Cowan
BIRTH PLACE: Clarendon, Jamaica

Being married to perennial Sunsplash M.C. Tommy Cowan certainly hasn't hurt Carlene's career. But her talent is strong enough to stand by itself. By turns churchical, R&B or roots, her voice is bell-clear and evocative, and her numerous foreign stays have given her music a decidedly sophisticated and international perspective.

She is recognized as one of the most dynamic and powerful music ministers coming out of the Caribbean. Along with her music ministry, Carlene is being used by the Lord to share the miracles God did and continues to do in her life which has touched many people in countless places. Anyone who has experienced her in ministry can attest to the fact that whenever she testifies in song, the anointed melodies bring hope and healing to the heart of the listener. It is without a doubt that God has anointed and appointed her for such a time as this.

Carlene spent her early childhood with her grand-parents who instilled the importance of God in her life. At the age of fourteen she migrated to England with the rest of her siblings to join her parents. From England she moved to Canada and then to Jamaica during which time she pursued a career in music and became known as Jamaica's song bird singing the songs of freedom. Carlene has recorded and released several albums, with number one singles such as Winnie Mandela, It Must Be Love, Going Down To Paradise, Santa Claus Do You Ever Come To The Ghetto, No Bias and Like Old Friends Do. She has also had major recording contracts with Gee Street, Island and PolyGram Records of the United States of America and Avex Trax out of Japan which led her to extensive tours of North and South America, Canada, Japan and Europe.

In 1996 she was diagnosed with cancer and out of that experience, with fervent prayer, fasting and the laying on of hands by the pastors and elders of her church received healing and recommitted her life to Jesus Christ. Today she sees this as God's way of taking her through the fire of endurance and having stood the test is empowered to fulfill God's purpose. I can now stand as a living testimony, she says, with renewed faith and His healing power, knowing that he answers prayers and is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

An active member of Family Church on the Rock, Kingston, Jamaica, under the leadership of Apostle David and Dr. Richard Keane, she was ordained as minister in music in August, 2000 and in December 2004 she received a Master's Degree in pastoral counseling from Trinity Theological Seminary of South Florida, USA.

Carlene is married to Tommy Cowan, himself a recommitted Christian with many years in the music business is her personal manager. Together they have produced two children Nathan and Naomi and she has also helped to raise three of Tommy's older children, Che, Sara and Shikisha. Tommy and Carlene are owners of Judah Recording Studio and manage an event planning and production company, Glory Music Ltd. The premier event of this company is Fun In The Son, a Christian Spring Festival that invites young people and their families from around the world to come to Jamaica and have fun and fellowship with the Son who made the sun. As full time ministers they also sow into the lives of the youths of Jamaica, such organizations as Maxfield Park Children's Homes, a home for homeless children and a feeding program in the inner city of Kingston.

RWW FASHION FEATURE - 'BRIDGET SANDALS'

A JOURNEY IN BRIDGET SANDALS
Novia McDonald-Whyte - Contributing editor Jamaica Observer
Sunday, December 07, 2003

Sandals designer Bridget say "Bridget sandals" in Jamaica and fashion watchers, as well as lovers of sexy leather straps, will smile the smug smile of those in the know. It has been, for Bridget Brown, (known by thousands as Bridget), a journey of twenty-odd years. The fact is, the leather soles of her sandals almost left her barefooted on several occasions. "It took me three years," Bridget tells SunDay to get my feet off the ground. I paid the price for not going to school. I had to endure artisans not cutting the leather properly, bad work attitude, sabotage, you name it, I went through it."
A baptism of fire, some might be tempted to add for the former Playboy Bunny. "I was a bunny between 1972 and 1977 at the Playboy Boscobel Beach," says Bridget, flashing her signature toothy smile, and still conscious of that bunny poise.

"Playboy was forced to close (no tourists were coming to Jamaica). I was forced to come back to Kingston. I had to find some means of survival. My first stop was G's One of a Kind -- an upscale boutique that sold one-of-a kind Italian shoes and clothing. I left that in May 1981, after Bob Marley's death. I sold pound-cloth for Carmen Brown of Karmen's Corner. "There I was with my scale underneath my arm, and my cushions at my side. I really never wanted to make sandals. I also made skull caps and crochet bags."

After several attempts to generate income, Bridget tells SunDay that divine intervention led her to the world of leather and the world of sandals. "There's a saying that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. This really applied in my case. After several motivational sessions with my friend Winston Clarke, who also taught me an affirmation which I repeated daily, I heard a voice say, 'Bridget why don't you make leather sandals?' I saw gold, red, and silver sandals. Armed with my life's saving of $2,000 I started."
Start she did and never looked back. Bridget even found the time and finances to attend school in Milan. "I went to school out of curiosity. I wondered if I was doing something wrong. Little did I know that I was in fact doing something right. My customers are happy, the sandals are fitting right, and I, too, am satisfied. I admire what I am doing."

No idle boast. Bridget Sandals were on the runway at New York Fashionweek, and Caribbean Fashionweek. Bridget Sandals are in Barbados, St Kitts, Antigua, Lincoln Avenue, South Beach (Miami), in the Village (New York) and at Controversy -- Battersea London.
Come next season, there's the possibility of a shipment to Japan, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Dallas.

"You have to be skilfull to survive. It has been a 20-year fight for survival. It's a struggle to maintain quality, confidence, style, craftsmanship. Finally, you have to have integrity in business."
As the chat comes to an end and Bridget does that Bridget walk towards her taxi, and there's a feeling that the very best is still to come from this beautiful sister.
